2019 Avinta Barossa Valley Shiraz
Avinta is a side project for Ryan Waples, General Manager/Winemaker at Barossa Valley Estate – maker of the E&E Black Pepper Shiraz, a permanent fixture on the Langton’s Classification of Australian wines – and before that he held a similar role at another of Jim Delegat’s wineries, Oyster Bay, as well as several Australian wineries. His family has a vineyard in Eden Valley, but the fruit for this wine was sourced from 70yo vines in the Barossa Valley. Our understanding is that in 1951 Ryan’s wife’s grandfather was pruning vines on the historic G Gramp vineyard and instead of disposing of the cuttings, he planted them on his own property! The fruit is exceptional so to help it shine Ryan selected top quality Ermitage ‘mixed stave’ French oak barrels (sourced from different forests, in this case Troncais and Bertranges). The 2019 marks the first release for Avinta, a very special wine limited to 1100 bottles nationwide.
